Periodontal or gum disease is caused by bacteria along with mucus and other food particles that form plaque on or between teeth. Brushing and flossing can help remove plaque. If plaque is not removed, it can harden into tartar that brushing does not remove. Tartar must be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist.

Periodontal diseases run from simple gum inflammation to serious disease resulting in soft tissue and bone damage. Teeth may be lost. Gum disease is not only a threat to oral health but may affect overall health. Symptoms are often not noticeable until the disease is advanced. Take this quiz to determine if you may be at risk for periodontal disease.
